Chapter 22

Far too inebriated and not enough to make a difference, I sat at a long table full of drunken men, my own tankard full. Three beers. Not enough to chase away the melancholy that settled deep into my heart. Certainly not enough to chase away the image of Rhiannon in Baethan’s arms.

That damn kiss.

Baethan Elemar was whisking Rhiannon away right under my nose and there was nothing I could do about it. The dreamy look in her eyes, the flush in her cheeks, the curiosity mixed with attraction. She liked him and before long she would love him. I felt the truth deep in my heart, and I knew I was in this position due to my selfish and reckless choices.

Even when it was made clear that I was honor bound to put duty above Rhiannon, I still chose to fall in love with her. I pursued a relationship and let her in when I promised to never let another woman into my heart again after my cheating and conniving ex-girlfriend Renee. Yet I gave into Rhiannon easily, felt a connection to her that was unlike any I ever experienced before. I should have been more cautious but that was in the past now and beyond repair.

My heart was lost before I knew I had given it away and now I was left alone, discarded as if I was nobody. That pissed me off. I was her Guardian. Her protector. I made the decisions, I fought the enemy, and I whisked her away to safety when that demon tried to kill her only weeks ago. Not some glorified nobility that thought he was owed something.

Baethan was dashing and charming and he played his cards well. He saved Rhiannon’s life. He was mysterious and kept her wanting more. No wonder she was attracted to him.

But Rhiannon was my girl, not Baethan’s.

Enough disguises and lies, half-truths and omissions, all of it was the same result. Rhiannon was kept in the dark. She wasn’t told everything. The Guardian Army watched her closely but the Council was keeping even tighter tabs on their future queen. Baethan was somewhere in the middle with his own hidden agenda. Not a single one of them was completely truthful with her and the worst part was, the decisions were made for her own safety.

Would she see it that way? When it was all finally revealed, would she forgive each part I had to play? Would she hate me? And what of Baethan and his deception?

Sooner or later the truth would catch up with us all.

Another tankard slammed down in front of me. My lip lifted in a snarl when I noticed the dark stare of Baethan Elemar, the source of all of my troubles. It had been three hours since Rhiannon retired to bed and almost the exact moment that I proceeded to get drunk.

Again.

“Don’t you think it’s hard to protect her when you’re intoxicated?”

Sneering in his face, I didn’t bother to say what I really thought. “I can do my job.
